South Phoenix Barrios Vanishing due to
Sky Harbor Airport Expansion
The neighborhoods immediately west of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport are in decay and
slowly vanishing as the need for expansion continues to demand land for growth. At the
intersection of East Buckeye Road and South 16th Street, the Golden Gate Barrio disappeared
more than two decades ago, but the southwest corner where a once booming commercial center
used to be looks like a ghost town doomed to demolition. Bulldozers will just continue to advance
